As the temperature continues to drop, many of us will be trading in our gardening rakes for snow shovels. In celebration of all things wintry, we’ve rounded up eight extravagant ice sculptures that are exceptionally detailed. Some were made for festivals and others were made just for fun—but all of them will leave you frozen in your tracks.
London
Eskimo Ice’s sculptors were able to replicate various London landmarks out of ice—as commissioned by the Chinese beer Harbin for the Taste of London Food Festival. Photo courtesy of Eskimo-Ice.co.uk.
Skateboard
With the Reebok shoe perfectly positioned on this ice skateboard, you can see that it was definitely made true to size. Photo courtesy of Eugenio Franchi.
Triceratops
Much like its ancestors, this dinosaur from the 2004 Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan, is probably extinct now, but from a very different cause—the end of winter. Photo courtesy of Doug Mann via PhotoMann.com.
Church
At the 2007 Ice and Snow Festival in Harbin, China, this religious-inspired structure was created from ice that was accented with multicolored lights to resemble a cathedral. Photo courtesy of TK via Flickr.com.
Warrior
Photographer Peter Villerius captured this detailed carving of a soldier in uniform—made entirely out of ice—while in the city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Photo courtesy of Peter Villerius via Flickr.com.
Dirt Bike
Ice sculptor Janson Iwakami can create just about anything out of frozen water, including company logos, centerpieces and sculptures, like this motorbike. Photo courtesy of Janson Iwakami via AmazingIce.com.
Car
This slick Chevy on ice—also created by Janson Iwakami—was commissioned for a ’50s-themed festival in Seattle. Vroom!Photo courtesy of Janson Iwakami via AmazingIce.com.
Gymnast
Fairbanks, Alaska, is home to the World Ice Art Championships, and in the 2007 this impressive gymnast carving was on display there. We think it’s gold medal–worthy. Photo courtesy of Terry Feuerborn via Flickr.com.
